Academic Year 2020/2021

Announcement January 21, 2021

In the context of the situation experienced in the national territory, and in order to cope with the pandemic caused by COVID-19, the competent national authorities have decided to suspend the on-site teaching and non-teaching activities.

Given the international public health emergency, specifically in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, the Higher Institute of Administration and Languages| ISAL intensified its measures.

Thus, it decided to maintain all teaching and non-teaching activities, including the assessment moments, online, through the means made available for this purpose (See the document: Plan of Activities 2020/2021).

This Guideline may be updated at any time, taking into account the evolving epidemiological framework of COVID-19, and thus this decision is of dynamic application and changeable with new information and knowledge.

The present decision takes effect on January 25, 2021.

We remind you to face this difficult time with serenity, resilience, hope and optimism.

Situations not foreseen in this announcement should be analysed on a case-by-case basis.

Announcement January 12, 2021

Given the international public health emergency, specifically in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, and according to the Announcement – Extraordinary Meeting of the Regional Government New measures for prevention and control of COVID-19 – the Higher Institute of Administration and Languages | ISAL has decided to suspend all teaching and non-teaching on-site activities, between January 4, 2021, and January 8, 2021, so that they must be carried out online, through the means provided for that purpose (See the document: Plan of Activities 2020/2021).

Indispensable activities, according to the request made by the teacher, may be carried out at ISAL’s facilities.

Announcement November 2020

Given the international public health emergency, declared by the World Health Organization, on January 30, 2020, as well as the classification of the NEW coronavirus as a pandemic, on March 11, 2020, the Higher Institute of Administration and Languages has been implementing some measures.

Currently, ISAL, in accordance with the measures imposed by the Government following the Decree No. 9/2020, of November 21, which enforces the declaration of the state of emergency, seeks to minimise the impact on its academic community.

Thus, it is with a high sense of responsibility, concern and raising to the maximum common sense, civic sense and health of the whole community, that we communicate that we have decided to suspend the teaching and non-teaching activities on November 30 and December 7, 2020.

Beginning of the Academic Year 2020/2021

In the context of the situation experienced in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, as well as throughout the country, and in order to cope with the COVID-19 infection, the competent regional and national authorities have issued a set of guidelines and directives to all higher education institutions, in order to minimise and create constraints to the spread of the New Corona Virus – COVID 19.

The face-to-face teaching and non-teaching activities at ISAL – Higher Institute of Administration and Languages – in the academic year 2020/2021, which we urgently need to stimulate and guarantee, must be the target of concrete measures, namely measures to prevent and control the transmission of COVID-19 that must be considered in all spaces, including free occupation areas and spaces, as well as classrooms, the library and laboratories.

Attention should also be given to all conditions for students to do internships outside ISAL’s facilities.

ISAL has prepared a plan that contemplates the main activities to be developed during the academic year 2020/2021, articulating ISAL’s strategic decisions as well as the guidelines and directives issued by the competent authorities:

COVID-19 Supplementary Exam Period

Exams: 2nd, 4th and 6th Semester Course Units

Registration Period: Until October 30, 2020

Exams: From November 18 to November 30, 2020

Fees: Equal to the Working-Student Season

Announcement – March 13, 2020

With the new developments and governmental decisions, and based on a perspective of prudence and prevention for teachers/students, institutional partners and the general population, the Board of Directors of the Higher Institute of Administration and Languages, has decided to suspend for two weeks the face-to-face teaching activities, starting Monday 16th March.

In order to minimise the impact of this decision on student learning, mechanisms are being developed to ensure that classes are held via videoconferencing or distance systems.

Other initiatives such as workshops, seminars and other events will remain cancelled until the end of this month. The measures will be reviewed periodically according to government directives and suggestions.

Today, it will also be decided with the institutional partners how to proceed with the curricular internships that have already started.

ISAL COVID-19 Contingency Plan

Following the most recent events, the Higher Institute of Administration and Languages (ISAL) has prepared a Contingency Plan, so that the necessary measures for its implementation are adopted.

Information Session on COVID-19 at ISAL

The Regional Secretary for Health and Civil Protection, Pedro Ramos, participated in the information session on the New Coronavirus, COVID 19, at the Higher Institute of Administration and Languages (ISAL), on March 4. The session was led by Intensive Care Medicine specialist and Coronavirus coordinator at SESARAM, Margarida Câmara.

It was another opportunity to reinforce information about basic procedures to adopt in the event of a suspected case of COVID 19.

The target audience of this awareness-raising action for the prevention of COVID-19 were undergraduate students of Tourism and Hotel Organisation and Management, as well as professionals who have close contact with tourists.

Besides the governor, also present was the Vice President of the Institute of Health Administration, Bruna Gouveia, who recommended the use of the SRS 24Madeira line, 800 24 24 20, in case of doubt related to COVID-19.

However, there are 3 basic behaviours reminded in the session that can reduce the risk of transmission, namely:

  • Washing hands frequently with soap and water;
  • Complying with the respiratory etiquette;
  • Avoiding close contact with sick people presenting respiratory symptoms.
